Traditions
Traditions
While I have been studying for my Yoga Teacher Certification, I noticed there are several references to traditions and rituals, and it got me thinking about my own family’s traditions. When I really thought about it, I was disappointed upon my realization we didn’t have of any real traditions. It got me thinking about what things I can incorporate into my life, so my kids can carry traditions on to their own families someday. I had gone back through my life as a child to think of anything I would consider a tradition I was fond of and could revive.
Then, just a couple days ago my High School had a ceremony inviting alumni to the school for the 2018 Hall of Fame Inductions. I was on the Girls Gymnastics Team the year we won the VA State Championship and the whole team was asked to be a part of this honorable event. It has been almost 25 years since I graduated High School and I don’t think I have been back inside the building since the day I graduated. It truly was enjoyable to go back to the school for the ceremony, which also had an announcement during half-time of the Friday night football game. It was a very energetic night.
Anyway, in the (almost) 25 years since I graduated, the school has been through a HUGE transformation with considerable expensive renovations. Almost everything was updated except for this tiled inset of our High School mascot, a Spartan, in the main foyer of the school. This was put in place when the school opened in 1969 and the tradition was that only Seniors could walk on it. If anyone else stepped, even an inch, on the display they would have to clean it with a toothbrush. This was a long-standing tradition and I was delighted to see it was still there in its original location, seemingly untouched. It made me realize, traditions do never die. When so much change occurs around us, traditions are sacred and timeless. I made it a goal to accelerate my priority to develop lasting, memorable traditions for my family history and legacy.
What are some traditions some of you do in your lives? I’d love to hear them.
Thank you!!
